Basement Waterproofing in Lebanon, New Hampshire, by Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems.
Challenge
A Lebanon, New Hampshire, homeowner experienced recurring water issues in their basement, including damp walls, musty odors, and occasional water pooling during heavy rains. These problems made the space unusable and posed potential risks for mold growth and structural damage. Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems conducted a detailed inspection to solve the issue. They proposed a comprehensive waterproofing solution that combined the CleanSpace® Wall System with a custom-designed drainage and sump pump system.
The basement's water issues were traced to hydrostatic pressure forcing water through the foundation walls and floor. The moisture penetrated cracks and weak points in the concrete, leading to dampness throughout the basement. The walls showed signs of efflorescence, indicating a consistent problem with humidity.
Solution
The team implemented a two-part approach to ensure complete waterproofing:
- CleanSpace® Wall System Installation:
- Wall Preparation: The basement walls were thoroughly cleaned and prepped to ensure a smooth installation of the CleanSpace® vapor barrier.
- Vapor Barrier Application: The CleanSpace® Wall System, made from a durable, heavy-duty plastic liner, was installed across all basement walls. This system helps direct water seepage to the drainage system while creating a vapor barrier to prevent moisture from entering the living space. The bright white finish also brightened the basement, making it more usable.
- Custom-Designed Waterproofing System:
- Perimeter Drainage Installation: A custom drainage system was installed along the perimeter of the basement, beneath the CleanSpace® liner, to collect any water entering from the walls and floor. The system was designed to channel water toward a newly installed sump pump.
- Sump Pump Installation: A reliable sump pump system featuring a battery backup for added protection during power outages was installed to efficiently pump collected water out of the basement and away from the home’s foundation.
- Discharge Line and IceGuard®: To ensure water would be effectively expelled from the home even in freezing conditions, an IceGuard® discharge line was installed to prevent water backup due to ice blockages.
Combining the CleanSpace® Wall System and the custom waterproofing design successfully eliminated water intrusion in the basement. The homeowner noticed an immediate improvement in the air quality, with no more musty odors and a drier environment overall. The cellar has since remained dry even after several heavy rainfalls, and the new setup allows for easy future maintenance. Matt Clark's Northern Basement Systems effectively transformed a wet and unusable basement into a dry, healthy space through the use of the CleanSpace® Wall System and a custom waterproofing solution. This case demonstrates the importance of a tailored approach to basement waterproofing, addressing wall seepage and groundwater pressure to achieve lasting results.
