An Earthquake is a Threat to Your Foundation

On October 16th, 2012 residents of New England experienced an unusual natural occurrence when their nearby floors and walls temporarily shook. It was later determined that a minor earthquake of a 4.6 magnitude rattled southern Maine, Tuesday evening around 7:12 P.M. just 20 miles west of Portland, Maine.

The epicenter of the earthquake struck about 3 miles west of Hollis Center, Maine, and about 3 miles deep into the ground. Any homeowner eating dinner during the time of the tremor may not have needed a napkin, as the quake was a minor and non-threatening occurrence, causing no apparent damage or injuries.

What’s amazing is that even a minor earthquake such as this one can have significant impact. This earthquake was felt as far south as Connecticut and Rhode Island, with the tremors more apparent in closer areas such as Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire. The resident’s of Maine experienced the most severe effects of the earthquake, with some describing the incident as loud as an explosion or a car-crash.

Now that the earthquake has passed, what should you do as a resident of New England? Well first things first, you should check the interior and exterior of your foundation for any hairline stress cracks. Small cracks like these may eventually turn into a larger more serious threat to your home if not addressed properly or soon enough.
